Our Story

After meeting in Kenya in 2017, both on what was supposed to be the last leg of our long-term travels, with plans to return back to work, neither of us could have imagined that this was actually just the beginning of something much bigger. The travel bug had well and truly taken ahold of us and going back to the lives we had before travelling no longer had the same appeal.

We agreed that "just a few more months" of travelling might be what we needed to get the bug out of our system. So, two months later, we landed in Mexico City and made our way through Central America. We fit A LOT into the next 3 months, ticking off so many bucket list items as we went. The funny thing about bucket lists though is that the more you tick off, the longer the list seems to get! So, what was supposed to be just an extra 3 months travelling through Central America has now turned into 4+ years of exploring the world together!

When the pandemic hit in 2020, our plans to travel through Asia, ending at the Tokyo Olympics, were completely turned upside down. Instead of constantly being on the go, for the first time since we met, we found ourselves staying in one place for the next 2 years. Singapore quickly became our home and taught us that even one of the world's smallest countries can have so much to offer when you have the time to really explore it! It also gave us the chance to reflect on the last few years of travel, and gave us the time to focus on starting this website, something we had wanted to do for a long time. So Folan Finds was born!

For most of my life, traveling was something that happened for 2 weeks a year. As a kid, I would look at the world map in class and day dream about all these places that seemed unreachable. I always had a burning desire to see the world, but I could never find the time in life to just go. My culture is all about working to climb the corporate ladder for 40 years, and enjoying travel when you retire.

In 2016, I created an opportunity to escape from corporate America and go see the world. Who would have guessed that Olympic selfies would lead to a journey across all 7 continents and 100+ countries?! Now many of those places on the classroom map are home to my friends around the world!

Travel for me started long before I can remember. My parents have always been big travellers, spending their honeymoon backpacking through Europe and Africa! Most years they would take me and my brother to a new country and at one point we even lived in the UK and Norway. By the time I started my big trip through Europe and Africa, I had already visited 12 countries!

Before my big trip, I had been working in a busy emergency department in Melbourne as a registered nurse. Travelling anywhere from Australia takes a long time, so I felt like if I was going to really travel it would have to be longer than the few weeks paid time off I got each year. I started planning out a 6 month trip through Europe and Africa - very similar to what my parents had done 30 years earlier and in June 2017 my backpacking adventure began!
