Visit the USA: How to Get There

Are you planning a trip to the United States? There are many different ways to get there - from taking a plane to taking a bus, even a boat if you are feeling adventurous. Here are the different ways you can get to the USA.

Getting to the USA by Plane

One of the most popular ways to get to the USA is via plane. Depending on your budget and the length of your trip, you may be able to find great deals on flights to the US. The USA is very accessible by air, with most states having multiple international airports which offer flights to and from many destinations around the world. Major cities within the US are also well connected by domestic flights. This means that you can fly into whichever city is cheapest from your starting point and then continue to your final destination with a domestic flight, which can often save a bit of money.

Generally, the East Coast airports (New York, Boston, Washington DC, Atlanta, and Miami) are the most cost-effective option for those flying in from Europe and the Caribbean. For those looking for the most affordable flights from Asia and Australia, the West Coast (LA, San Francisco, and Seattle) is the way to go. In addition to being a cheaper option, the West Coast cities often have more direct flights to Asia and Australia, which can save a great deal of time.

Prices for flights can vary significantly throughout the year, and it is especially important to take this into account when booking flights around big holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. These holidays are usually very popular travel times, so it is important to plan ahead and book flights as far in advance as possible to ensure that you get the best prices. Taking the time to compare prices and shop around can also help you to get the best possible deal. You can check our guide on finding the cheapest flights here if you’re interested.

Getting to the USA by Car

It is possible to drive into the USA from Canada and Mexico, but these border crossings are notorious for their extraordinarily long wait times. There are some entry points that are better than others, but unless you have plenty of time, you might want to consider other options. If you do decide to drive, try to cross early in the morning as this is typically when they are shortest. Unfortunately, many of the towns on the border can be dangerous when entering from Mexico, so you should use extreme caution when crossing.

Getting to the USA by Bus

Greyhound provides buses from Mexico to the USA. However, with the availability of cheap flights between Mexico and the USA, air travel often logistically makes more sense. If you do plan to cross the border via bus, it is important to maintain caution as many of the border towns can be considered unsafe. From Canada, buses connect to most major cities on the East coast and a few on the West, such as LA, San Diego, Seattle, and Las Vegas.

Getting to the USA by Train

Amtrak operates the Maple Leaf train from Toronto to New York, with other connections to Montreal and Vancouver, making it a convenient option for travelers. In addition, there are several stops along the route, including Ottawa, Buffalo, and Albany, providing passengers with the opportunity to explore a variety of destinations along the way. Unfortunately, there are no train connections from Mexico to the USA.

Getting to the USA by Boat

There are several ferry services operating in the Caribbean and Mexico, which will take you to various ports in the USA. Be aware that the duration of the voyage can be quite long, and the cost can be quite expensive. Additionally, there may be additional costs associated with clearing customs and other port fees.

While some are better than others, there are plenty of options for getting to the USA for all kinds of travelers. Planes generally offer the fastest and most comfortable solution, but traveling by land or sea are also possibilities.
